July 15-19 and July 22-26

Discoveries Camp has two weeklong sessions, each with separate offerings in the morning and afternoon. We provide a supportive and collaborative environment – you bring along a desire to try new things!
 
  Session 1: July 15-19
  Session 2: July 22 - 26
 
Morning programs are from 9am to 12pm. Afternoon programs are from 1pm to 4pm. If your child is attending both morning and afternoon programs during the same week, we provide supervision during the one-hour break. Your child will need to bring a lunch.
 
Morning and afternoon programs are $175 each, and the full day program is $350.
 
As programs fill, we offer the option to be on a waitlist. We will contact people on this list if a spot becomes available. You will have 24 hours to either accept the spot or decline, after which we will offer it to the next person on the list.

Week 1 - July 15-19

VIDEO GAME DESIGN - waitlist only!

Design and create your own video games! Learn about visual programming to make and play your own 3D simulation video games and play games made by other campers. You’ll gain coding experience, basic programming skills, and see how math and computers make that video game you love playing come to life.

SCIENCE OF COOKING  

Why does bread need yeast to rise? What does it mean to rise? What other foods use yeast? What makes a quick bread quick? How does milk turn into ice cream? If you are curious about what you eat, you will love this session. You will find the answers to all these questions and more as you take apart foods and learn their secrets. It’s science that you can eat!

IMAGINATION ACTIVATION 

Warning: Only sign up if you are ready to dive into adventure! Earn badges each time you stretch your brain, harness your power of creativity, and explore new worlds found in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math. How many badges can you earn this week? Accept the STEAM challenge and find out!

CHESS  

Learn the strategy and classic maneuvers used by all the grand masters. This session will center on small group instruction with the ability to practice in a one-on-one environment complete with tournaments!

MISSION IMPOSSIBLE

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to journey into the world of puzzles, codes, and hidden messages. Learn the spy craft in order to save our Person of Interest and battle the forces of evil. All remaining information is classified. We know you won’t let us down!

SOCCER CAMP

Love soccer? Come play with us! You will get plenty of field time, playing a variety of games as a group and building your individual soccer skills. Make sure to bring shin guards, soccer shoes and appropriate clothing for soccer in summer time!

TIE DYE

Show everyone how bright and vibrant you are! Learn how to create all kinds of tie dye designs that will wow everyone who sees you. Turn a t-shirt into an original, wearable piece of art and have fun finding your own style in a creative atmosphere.

WORKING WITH CLAY - waitlist only!

Get your hands dirty by working with clay. Pinch it, roll out worms of it, and press it into slabs to make a clay whistle, candle votive, and decorative plate. All you need is your imagination! Due to the nature of the clay and the drying and firing process, you will receive your final projects a few weeks after class.

Learn to construct and write code for a robot! Using Lego Education SPIKE sets, we will be designing robots to carry out almost any task you can think of. With various motors and sensors at your disposal, there is a huge amount of possibility. No matter your level of coding experience, if you are interested in learning then we have a place for you in this session!

CYANOTYPE PHOTOGRAPHY

Print photographs using only the sun! First, you will get scientific by conducting experiments with ultraviolet light and other light frequencies that are invisible to the human eye. Then, you will use what you learned to print photos, drawings and collages using the cyanotype process.  If you enjoy art, photography, science and spending time outside, this is for you!

FAIRY TALE THEATRE - waitlist only!

Lights, camera, action! Calling all actors, dancers, musicians, singers to participate in the creation and production of a short performance of a fairy tale. No experience necessary to have fun getting dramatic! This session will give campers hands-on experience on the joys of being part of a theatre arts community.

PAINT LIKE THE MASTERS

Have you ever been to a museum and looked at a painting and thought, “how did they do that?” Now’s your chance to find out! Learn about Picasso, Georgia O’Keefe, Matisse and Hilma Af Klint by actually creating art like theirs. Go in curious to know more, leave with knowing different art techniques and cool paintings that you created yourself!

AROUND THE WORLD

Travel around the world in just one week! No passport needed. Experience each country through sampling foods, learning songs, making crafts, and speaking the language. You don’t want to miss out on this immersive adventure!

WORD CRAFT

From flash fiction and story chains to blackout poems, this session is perfect for young writers who want to stretch their talents, discover new strengths, and challenge themselves. We’ll put the FUN in fundamentals as campers practice the skills needed to create strong, interesting stories. Risk-taking and revision will be celebrated. This is taught by children's book author, Mary Boone.

DRAWING 101

Take your drawing to the next level by learning the fundamentals all artists use to make their art. Learn how to shade a form to make it look 3-Dimensional, draw in perspective so those mountains fade into the distance, and capture facial expressions. You will draw a still-life picture and experiment with contour drawing using artists’ grade charcoal, conte crayons, oil pastels, colored pencils, ink, and drawing pencils.

3D SCULPTURE ART - waitlist only!

Try something new and creative! Learn how to create 3D art objects or sculptures. You will work with various materials such as polymer clay, air dry clay, collage, paper, wire, and paper mâché to create sculpture art.

PAPER PALOOZA

Want to actually make your own paper? You’ll learn that and how to hand-sew journals, make collages, and construct a literary-theme garland in this session. We provide a supportive and collaborative environment – you bring along a desire to try new things! This is a perfect pairing with our Word Craft Camp.

WATERCOLOR PAINTING

You will explore the magic of colors and the unique techniques of watercolor paints. Practice blending colors in still-lives and landscape paintings inspired by the nature around us. Learn how to create torrential rains, foggy mountains, starry skies and beaming rays of light all on a piece of paper!

Every effort will be made to notify parents or guardians in case of an emergency. 

In the event of an emergency, this is to certify that NOVA School has the permission of the undersigned to authorize necessary emergency medical care by the attending physician/licensed health professional, or others NOVA may choose, in case of accidental injury, ingestion, or illness. The undersigned agrees to hold any responsible adult who gives permission harmless and to release that individual from any liability in connection with granting such permission for treatment and, furthermore, we do hereby release, acquit, discharge, and covenant to hold harmless, NOVA School, its agents and employees, from any and all actions, claims, demands, damages, costs, loss of services, expenses and compensation, on account of, or in any way growing out of the granting of permission for any emergency medical care for my/our student during his/her participation in the Discoveries Camp.
