APhA President-elect and Trustee Candidate Application

The APhA Committee on Nominations is seeking applications for the offices of President-elect and Trustee for the APhA Board of Trustees. The elected President-elect and Trustees will be installed during the 2020 Annual Meeting and will complete three-year terms through the 2023 Annual Meeting. This application outlines eligibility criteria/qualifications, desired characteristics for the nominees, responsibilities and duties, expected time commitments for each position, submission requirements, and pertinent dates.

Application Requirements:
 
Submission of a complete application; current CV or detailed resume; digital headshot photo suitable for publication (1MB or larger in size required); biographical statement (250 words or less); confirmation of submission of Disclosure and Confidentiality Statement to APhA's Legal Counsel (more information will be provided upon submission of the following application)
 
 
Desired Characteristics for Members of the APhA Board of Trustees:
 
Nominees for President-elect and Trustees should possess at a minimum, the following characteristics:
  • Leadership ability and knowledge about the profession
  • Ability to commit the time required by the position
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Volunteer leadership experience with APhA or related professional organizations
  • Demonstrated ability to work as a team member
  • Adherence to high ethical standards
  • Ability to support majority decisions
  • Ability to understand the impact of issues on the profession as a whole and across diverse practice settings
  • Ability to recognize and willingness to abstain from participation on Board action that presents a conflict of interest
  • General understanding of APhA Bylaws
  • Employer of candidate is aware and supportive

 

Position Responsibilities

 

President-elect (including President and Immediate Past President):

Eligibility Requirements

Nominees for APhA President-elect must be Active (pharmacist) Members of APhA.

Term of Office

The APhA President-elect is elected for a three-year term beginning the first year as President-elect and then ascending to President and Immediate Past President in subsequent years. The term for each position is one year beginning the day after the close of the APhA Annual Meeting and concluding on the last day of the APhA Annual Meeting the following year.

Responsibilities/Duties

a. President-elect

  • Serves as an Officer of the Association
  • Serves as a Trustee and follows the duties/responsibilities of a Trustee
  • Serves as a member of the APhA Board of Trustees Executive Committee (APhA-BTExC)
  • Serves as Chair of the APhA Strategic Directions Committee
  • Presides over the APhA Academy Leadership Meeting
  • Presides over meetings of the APhA Board and the APhA-BTExC in the absence of the President
  • Assumes the Presidency in the event the President can no longer continue in his/her term
  • Represents the Association at assigned national/state pharmacy and other healthcare organization meetings

b. President

  • Serves as an Officer of the Association
  • Serves as a Trustee and follows the duties/responsibilities of a Trustee
  • Serves as the Chair of the APhA Board of Trustees Executive Committee
  • Presides over all meetings of the Association and Board
  • Appoints Association and Board Committees
  • Serves as an ex-officio voting member of all APhA Board of Trustees Committees
  • Serves as the media spokesperson for APhA when needed
  • Represents the Association at assigned national/state pharmacy and other healthcare organization meetings

c. Immediate Past President

  • Serves as an Officer of the Association
  • Serves as a Trustee and follows the duties/responsibilities of a Trustee
  • Serves as a member of the APhA Board of Trustees Executive Committee
  • Serves as Chair of the APhA Performance Improvement Committee
  • Represents the Association at assigned national/state pharmacy and other healthcare organization meetings

Time Commitment 

a. President-elect

The President-elect should expect to spend at least 40 meeting and meeting preparation days serving APhA. Meetings and meeting preparation may be face-to-face, by telephone, or by e-mail – including 5 Board meetings, 12 Executive Committee Conference calls, committee meetings for at least one Board Committee, the APhA Annual Meeting, and meetings of other national/state pharmacy and healthcare organizations as assigned. APhA reimburses for travel and hotel expenses associated with assigned meetings.

b. President

The President should expect to spend at least 50 meeting and meeting preparation days serving APhA. Meetings and meeting preparation may be face-to-face, by telephone, or by e-mail – including 5 Board meetings, weekly telephone meetings with the Executive Vice President, 12 Executive Committee Conference calls, committee meetings for at least one Board Committee, the APhA Annual Meeting, and meetings of other national/state pharmacy and healthcare organizations as assigned. APhA reimburses for travel and hotel expenses associated with assigned meetings.

c. Immediate Past President

The Immediate Past President should expect to spend at least 30 meeting and meeting preparation days serving APhA. Meetings and meeting preparation may be face-to-face, by telephone, or by e-mail – including 5 Board meetings, 12 Executive Committee Conference calls, committee meetings for at least one Board Committee, the APhA Annual Meeting, and meetings of other national/state pharmacy and healthcare organizations as assigned. APhA reimburses for travel and hotel expenses associated with assigned meetings.

 

Trustee (2 separate positions):

Eligibility Requirements

Nominees for APhA Trustee must be pharmacist Members of APhA.

Term of Office

The term of office for Trustees is three years. The “year” begins on the day after the close of business of the APhA Annual Meeting and concludes on the last day of business of the Annual Meeting. The term of office for the Trustees elected in this cycle will be March 2018 through the last day of the 2021 Annual Meeting.

Responsibilities/Duties

  • Serves on the APhA Board of Trustees
  • Responsible for the general strategic direction and fiscal management of APhA affairs, functioning at the governance versus the operational level
  • Directs APhA toward achievement of its mission and objectives in meeting the needs of its members.
  • Serves as a member of an assigned APhA Board of Trustees Committee(s)
  • Acts as an ambassador for APhA
  • Acts as an information source for APhA
  • Takes an active role in fundraising – including support of APhA, the APhA Foundation, and the APhA Political Action Committee through financial contributions, if requested
  • Acts on matters of APhA policy for the APhA House of Delegates in the interim between House sessions
  • Recruits members for the Association
  • Identifies opportunities for APhA programs and services

Time Commitment

An APhA Trustee should expect to spend 25 meeting and meeting preparation days each year serving APhA. Meetings and meeting preparation may be face-to-face, by telephone, or by e-mail including – 5 Board meetings, committee meetings for at least one Board Committee, the APhA Annual Meeting, and meetings of other national/state pharmacy and healthcare organizations as assigned. APhA reimburses for travel and hotel expenses associated with assigned meetings.

Disclosure and Confidentiality Statement:

The Association recognizes and applauds the interest of individuals to serve their profession and its organizations in a leadership capacity and welcomes their involvement. There are numerous opportunities for individuals to serve APhA whether it be in an elected, appointed, or volunteer capacity.  For individuals wishing to serve in an elected capacity, the Association has a responsibility to its members to ensure that its elected officials can provide undivided loyalty to advancing the organization's strategic direction and growth. In accordance with APhA policy, each candidate for APhA Board of Trustees must complete a disclosure and confidentiality statement prior to being considered by the Committee on Nominations. These forms are submitted directly to APhA's Legal Counsel for review to ensure that candidates do not have a potential conflict of interest that would minimize their effectiveness as a member of the APhA Board of Trustees if it could not be appropriately managed. The official slate of candidates will be available by mid-December 2016.

Required Attendance at Annual Meeting

Once slated as a candidate you will be sent information that pertains to meetings or sessions that you will be required to attend at the 2017 APhA Annual Meeting in San Francisco, California (March 24-27, 2017). You will attend this meeting at your own expense. You will also be given the opportunity to make minor revisions to the answers you submitted to the questions in the Nomination Application Form and to your biographical sketch prior to their use on the APhA Website, in election materials, and in other Association communication vehicles.
