Look for a water meter or curb stop valve to find where the water line enters your home. These are usually at the front of your property, close to the street or sidewalk, in ground-level boxes labeled "water" or "meter." Once you spot them, follow the shortest path to your house. The water line should enter your home through the floor or foundation wall nearby.
After finding where the water line enters your home, locate the part of the pipe closest to the wall or floor before it connects to a valve or meter. This is where you can test the pipe material. Identifying this pipe is important.
