Seizing the Means of Production: The Accessibility of Electronic Music

1. What is the research study about? 
You are invited to take part in this research study. The research study will investigate current experiences of experimental electronic music artists in Australia from an intersectional feminist perspective and aims to identify how electronic music has provided access to music making where other mediums have not, and to identify any barriers to participation that remain. It is anticipated that the study will contribute valuable insights for current and future practitioners and industry stakeholders such as education providers, event producers, and hardware and software developers.                                                                                                                             
 
You have been invited because you identify as female, trans*, non-binary or gender non-conforming and you create electronic music. Your contact details were obtained from the researcher’s immediate and extended professional network.
 
2. Who is conducting this research?
The study is being carried out by the following researchers: Alice Bennett and Dr Suzanne Osmond, National Institute of Dramatic Art.
 
3. Inclusion/Exclusion Criteria
Before you decide to participate in this research study, we need to ensure that it is ok for you to take part. The research study is looking recruit people who meet the following criteria:
• Identify as female, trans, non-binary or gender non-conforming
• Create electronic music
• Are over the age of 18
 
Exclusion criteria for those who are not eligible to participate in the study include:
• People who do not fulfill all 3 of the inclusion criteria above
 
4. Do I have to take part in this research study?
Participation in any research study is voluntary. If you do not want to take part, you do not have to.

If you decide you want to take part in the research study, you will be asked to:
• Read the information carefully (ask questions if necessary);
• Complete the online questionnaire.
 
5. What does participation in this research require, and are there any risks involved?
If you decide to take part in the research study, we will ask you to complete an online questionnaire. The questionnaire will ask you questions about your experience of accessibility in electronic music and your intersectional identity. It should take approximately 10 minutes to complete.

Participants will be able to go into a draw to win a $50 Mannys & Store DJ gift voucher, to be drawn on November 1, 2021. To enter the draw, please submit your contact details when prompted after completing the survey.
 
If you experience discomfort or feelings of distress while participating in the research and you require support, you can stop participating at any time. You can also tell a member of the research team and they will provide you with assistance or alternatively a list of support services and their contact details are provided below.
 
6. What are the possible benefits to participation?
We hope to use information we get from this research study to create a data set which will create the evidence needed for changes in the industry which will benefit others who experience barriers to participation in electronic music creation.
