Complex Case Abstract Submission

The American Osteopathic College of Anesthesiologists Annual Convention & Conclave/VAPOR is pleased to offer a scientific session highlighting the outstanding investigative work within the field of anesthesiology and the subspecialties.  The peer-reviewed and accepted abstracts will be presented with a short PowerPoint Slide presentation on the afternoon of Saturday, September 30th, 2023.  Abstracts will be accepted in the following two categories: Complex case submission and scientific investigation.  Abstract submission will close at midnight EST Monday, May 15th, 2023.

Complex Case Abstract Guidelines:

The following are the submission guidelines for the 2023 AOCA Annual Convention & Conclave/VAPOR.  Compliance with the guidelines is required for abstract consideration.  Content should be relative to the specialty of anesthesiology and its subspecialties.

  • Title (Short, specific indicating the nature of the work)
    • Use title case when entering the title
    • Avoid abbreviations
  • Authors and institutional affiliations should be listed
  • Complex case submissions will include three (3) sections:
    • Introduction
    • Case Presentation
    • Discussion
  • Submissions are limited to 3,300 characters
    • Character count includes:
      • Body text
      • Spaces
      • Figures, tables, and other graphics (300 characters each)
        • Tables, figures or other graphics should be inserted on individual pages and labeled
        • Permission to use copyrighted material must be obtained and proof submitted prior to use
      • Standard abbreviations may be used without definition
        • Non-standard abbreviations should be kept to a minimum
      • Use generic drug/product names rather than trade names
      • Submissions must include at least one (1), but no more than three (3) references
        • References are not included in the character count
      • The names and email addresses of all authors should be listed on the final page
      • Once the abstract is submitted, no revisions are permitted
      • Complex Case Abstracts will be scored on the following:
        • Clear description regarding the unique/challenging aspects of anesthetic management
        • Inclusion of clinical data and anesthetic management
        • Statement of how the observation supports a clinical or scientific principle for possible future investigation
        • Content organization
        • Presentation of subject knowledge
        • Clarity
          • Well-written in a style that is understandable by even a non-specialist
        • Examples and resources

 

General Guidelines

  • Primary abstract authors are encouraged to present in person at the 2023 AOCA Annual Convention & Conclave/VAPOR
    • In the rare case that the primary author is unavailable, a co-author may present
      • In fulfillment of scholarly project requirements, the intention is that trainees will present their work in the moderated sessions and be able to respond to moderator and audience questions
    • Submitted text and images must be HIPPA compliant, including masking of all patient identification material
      • Images with patient identifiers will not be considered for presentation
    • Only one submission is allowed per category per presenting author
    • The submitting author is responsible for abstract content
      • AOCA will not copyedit submissions
      • Permission must be obtained in writing by the primary author for uses of any copyrighted material
    • All communications regarding the abstract submission will be sent to the presenting author
    • The presenting author is responsible for providing the email for all authors
    • Abstract authors and co-authors will receive requests by email for disclosures of conflicts of interest after the presenting author submits the abstract
      • If any co-author fails to submit his/her disclosures before the selected deadline, the abstract will not be reviewed and will be rejected
    • Failure to follow AOCA abstract policies may result in disqualification of an abstract
    • Resident and Student presenters are eligible for monetary recognition for the top abstracts
