APPLICATION 2009-2010 McDOUGAL Academic Writing Tutor Deadline - March 31, 2009


GENERAL PURPOSE


The objective of Graduate Writing Tutors is to assist students who wish to improve their overall writing and who have writing-related questions, uncertainties, and/or difficulties.


ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND COMMITMENTS


1. Report to the Graduate Writing Consultant;

2. Participate in the fall orientation and training session;

3. Participate in weekly meetings and regular training retreats;

4. Make and keep appointments with graduate students who need help with their writing;

5. Assist in creating and updating program materials and newsletters.

ELIGIBILITY


All full-time graduate students, registered and in good standing for the 2009-2010 academic year, are eligible to apply. Preference is given to students who will be in years 3 through 6 of their degree program. Tutors must be in residence in the New Haven area for the academic year of their appointment. Current or previous tutors must reapply each year.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES


- Excellent academic writing skills;

- Significant experience in providing feedback to other writers;

- Teaching experience;

- Excellent oral and written communication skills;

- Excellent problem solving skills;

- Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.

TERMS OF APPOINTMENT


McDougal Graduate Writing Tutors for 2009-2010 will be paid $21.00 per hour for a minimum of 3 hours per week for the fall and the spring semesters. If needed, they are expected to be available for up to 7 hours per week. The honorarium goes in addition to any research, teaching or other fellowship they may hold, subject to Graduate School and University policies. Tutor's duties for the 2009-2010 academic year begin September 1, 2009.
